PHOTO EXHIBITION « PARIS DANSE-T-IL ? » by David ELOFER

PRESS RELEASE / INVITATION

19 Mars 2013

PHOTO EXHIBITION
« PARIS DANSE-T-IL ? » by David ELOFER
May 23rd, 2013 at 7:00pm – Centre des Arts Vivants / Paris

« A ballerina, a rest, a movement, an instant…in Paris »

David ELOFER reveals his pictorial rendezvous between Paris and its dancers.

In this exhibition, Photographer David ELOFER describes his encounter with dancers, movement and space. In order to stage a living art form in an artistic and inanimate scenery, he led performers out of the dance halls, the theaters or the Opera de Paris – with which he collaborates –and invited them for a casual stroll through the dark streets of the city.
David Elofer invites you to share this vision of dance in Paris at the Centre des Arts Vivants.

As released from the ballet, the artists perform their classical movements alone in the city. We can see them giving in to the strange serenity of some of the secret corners of the capital city. In his pictures, the photographer confronts the grace, the lightness and the beauty of the dancers with the monumental character of the city and stones. In an industrial space as well as in front of a classical monument, one can feel the poetic dimension that dance movements confer to the streets, small lanes and back alleys, and ultimately to our own thoughts.

David ELOFER invites you to discover “PARIS DANSE-T-IL?” from May 23rd to June 30th 2013 at the Centre des Arts Vivants, 4 rue Bréguet - 75011 Paris. (Subway station: Bréguet-Sabin or Bastille)

Opening of the exhibition on May 23rd at 6:30pm,

Zoom on David ELOFER

Born on April 1976 in Cannes, David ELOFER grew up in the old village of Mougins until he turned 18. Then he came to Paris in order to do his military service in the division of Paris firefighters.
Then he flew to New York and entered the fashion world. He discovered at this time the photo shooting, the media that will become six years later his way of expression. Back to Paris, he met by chance the dancers of the “Opera de Paris”. He discovered therefore a passion for movement and became the photographer of this legendary place, an activity he still holds today.

Dancing in Paris

Dancing in Paris

Dance, as the quintessential way of engraving movement into space is what fascinates the photographer David ELOFER.
His work thus traces the encounter between dancers and the camera objective. Therefore he decided to lead his interpreters out of dance halls and theatres through the streets of Paris.
The art of composition: photography, poetry …
In the streets of Paris, a ballerina, a rest, an instant, glimpses of movements, captured alive, a suspended tutu - a rendezvous between the “mythical” city of Paris and fabulous dancers.
Finding unlikely as well as relevant places, David ELOFER gives both a powerful and fragile dimension to images, which become accidental and beautiful.
Like runaways from a ballet, some artists still perform classical dance steps, others seem to give in to the overwhelming calm and oddity of some areas of the city.
In his snapshots, the light and beautiful dancers are silhouetted against the massive city and stones.
Captured in industrial areas or places of renewal, one can feel how movement brings poetry on to our streets, our dead-ends and finally our thoughts.

PAINT LAB

PAINT LAB

Spotlight lighting, sophisticated staging, chiseled bodies… Imagination then drives the photo shoot.
David ELOFER began to explore the body by covering it with clay or plaster.
Looking for a translation of the dancer performance, the picture leads us into a peculiar universe of combined twisted bodies. ...
Proceeding in his experience, painting becomes an essential material of the shootings, a “PAINT LAB”.
Through a subtle mixture of material and postures, foot, arm, back, everything makes sense.
The image shapes the muscles, material shaping the body, highlighting a tense profiled body.
Then appear, emotion, sensitivity, delicacy.
